The Basics of VoIP

Don't Worry — Your Fingers Still Do The Walking When I first started voicing the prompts for Asterisk, I must confess to having absolutely no knowledge about VoIP whatsoever. I only knew that VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) — of which Asterisk was a shining example – is a technology which enables voice communications over IP networks, such as the internet or other packet-switched networks, rather than the traditional Public Switched Telphone Network (PSTN), typically used by the old, pioneer telcos.

Skype New Chair Appointment: Smart Move

Skype has signaled its intentions to aggressively build out its mobile business by appointing former Sony Ericsson (s sne) (s eric) President Miles Flint to chair its board . He’s an adviser to Silver Lake Partners, which led a group of private investors in taking a stake in Skype as it resolved its legal mess last fall. Flint, who left Sony Ericsson in 2007 and joined Silver Lake the following year, is a natural fit on several levels.

Initial thoughts on FreePBXv3 and FreeSWITCH vs Asterisk

As I’ve been testing out FreePBXv3 with FreeSWITCH, I figured I should blog my experiences, as they’ve been surprisingly pleasant! After I got notification on the Elastix Beta mailing list about FreePBXv3, I was stoaked to learn it’s been released, even in an unfinished form! I went looking a while back for a FreeSWITCH GUI and was sadly disappointed.

Channel Competencies & Innovation

When we hire direct sales representatives to take our products or services to market, we look for particular experiences, attributes, knowledge, and capabilities in viable sales candidates. It makes sense that the core competencies of our direct sales organization compliment the strategy and business plan so we’re successful in penetrating respective market segments and / or verticals. For example, if you’re core product offering is educational subject workbooks and the target segment is K-12; the sales representative on your staff is more than likely going to have educational acumen and experience – and can speak to the quantitative strides in learning by incorporating the practice workbooks into the classroom.

SIP and Your Firewall

SIP Trunks are supplied to your IP/PBX via the internet connection (PIPE) provided by your Internet Service Provider.  Since this pipe is typically the primary gateway between the wild west of the public internet and your organizations LAN you have a firewall in place to stop unauthorized access into your network.  VoIP/SIP is a more complicated protocol to implement than standard internet traffic. In most instances the current firewall in place will not allow SIP trunks to work.  5 minutes of research on the internet will let you know if your current firewall is “SIP Aware”.  If replacing the current firewalls proves necessary, contact your IP/PBX supplier and ask for a firewall that they have experience with.  This will save money because of the time necessary to learn a new product.  A phased approach to implementing your new SIP Trunks is advised in order to prevent any interruptions in service.  The following steps should insure a smooth transition: 1)  Order the SIP trunks from your existing ISP along with at least 20 extra DID Numbers.

Do We Really Need to Say That?

As a professional voice talent who specializes in voicing all manner of telephone applications — and as someone who’s done it for awhile — I can confess to some of it being quite formulaic. Basically, what everyone wants is a warm greeting for their callers, simple instructions as to which department people should shuffle their calls, and perhaps a courteous after-hours greeting explaining when people can call back and start the whole process again. It becomes clear to me, though, that there are commonly heard aspects to automated phone systems which people hear all the time — and therefore, because they’re so familiar and widely heard — people are convinced they’re necessary in *their* systems…even when they just plain don’t make sense.
