What *Won’t* You Say?

It’s generally well known — by clients of mine whom I’ve worked with for awhile — that I am game to voice pretty much anything. In fact, I encourage offbeat, parody, and “joke” prompts — they provide a welcome respite from the run-of-the-mill (but highly necessary) IVR stock prompts. It’s especially fun when some of these “oddball” prompts are wedged in-between serious ones…in the misdt of serious prompts might be a prompt which says: “Are you still listening?” I love it.

Entrepreneurial solutions or Foreign Aid solutions? Should I be upset?

Earlier today I picked up a copy of Jeffrey Sachs’ The End of Poverty. I’ve been so intrigued by this quarter’s readings on the use of digital technologies (primarily mobile) in the developing world that I wanted to read some more on my own

Languages I Don’t Speak — But I’m Happy Voice In Them!

Despite me recording prompts in Spanish almost every day, I don’t technically speak Spanish. Or Hebrew, Tagalog (an Austranesian language spoken in the Philippines) or a host of other languages which I’m urged, cajoled, or persuaded into voicing. I studied Spanish for two years at the University of Calgary, out of a necessity to accomodate American clients requiring bilingual prompts

Adding Phone Cards to Military Care Packages

“I’m preparing to send out military care packages for the holidays.  What phone card should I include?” I’ve talked to a number of people associated with volunteer organizations or churches who have been preparing to send care packages to our military personel overseas.  These care packages are very appreciated by the soldiers, and a phone card is a great item to include. One important thing to ask first before purchasing phone cards for care packages is what kind of phones the soldiers have access to.  There are usually phone tents set up by AT&T that will only work with AT&T Prepaid Phone Cards .  Other times, the soldiers may have access to other phone lines that are routed through the USA.  Before purchasing any phone cards for care packages, please take a minute to find out the type of phone first so you don’t end up purchasing phone cards that can’t be used. If the soldiers have access to the AT&T tents, then the AT&T Prepaid Phone Card will be the card you want to purchase.  They are available in $6.25 (125 minute) cards as well as $59.99 (1200 minute) cards.  For care packages, I recommend the $6.25 cards.

Punctuation is Your Best Friend With IVR Writing

Quite often, I get Asterisk prompt orders through the Digium site in which the client has written something like: “….this phrase comes after ‘Please enter your..’ and before ‘followed by pound.’” It’s a lot of effort to explain where the prompt will occur — especially when I have such an amazingly simple remedy — and it has everything to do with the correct use of punctuation. At the risk of making this entry sound like an lost episode of “Schoolhouse Rock”,  the proper use of elipses, commas, and periods will save you a lot of time, and ensure that you get the right inflection from your announcer. Take the phrase: “your pin number”.  When it’s “free-floating” (no punctution anywhere around it), your pin number   one gets no idea of where you intend the prompt to be placed in the sequence.

Phone Cards vs. Mobile Phones – Which should you use?

“Why should I use a phone card when I can just set up an international calling plan with my mobile provider?” Great question.  With such a broad variety of mobile phone plans out there, it can be much easier to have an international calling plan set up with your mobile provider, but it’s important to know that adding this can come with a great cost.  Depending on your overall international calling need, a phone card may still be the best way for you to save money on your out of country calls. Recently, we did a study where we compared our best phone card rates with the rates of the large mobile phone providers in the USA.  We added in all the service fees the providers charge as well as looking at our phone cards with additional fees to make sure we were looking at the total cost you would pay for your calls

Dipping into videos with Google’s GAUDI

Manas Ganguly highlighted the way in which Google Audio Indexing (short form GAUDI) is encouraging media democratization. That process was started by YouTube but Google video search can now allow a user to search for a particular reference in a speech

¿Google Audio?

A Real Google Phone

Image by Getty Images via Daylife An item on The Street reports that Google Plans Its Own Android Phone . In what is likely to be seen as disruptive to the wireless status quo, Google is working with a smartphone manufacturer to have a Google-branded phone available this year through retailers and not through telcos, according to Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar, who has talked to Google’s design partners about the plan. This move would fulfill Google’s pledge to bring a new generation of open-standard mobile Internet devices to consumers

Indian Telecom Tariff War to Impact Industry Profitability Negatively

Debt ratings agency, Fitch says that it expects the recent tariff war by new telecom entrants in India and the likely retaliation by incumbent operators, will have a significant impact on industry revenues and profitability. The reduced tariffs will lower the ARPUs and operating margins for all industry players

This cellphone registering thing is crap, new-world order, there shall be no privacy, public opinion will be not requested and yet it is their rights and privacy being infringed, is there any scientific nor statistical prove that crime commited in countries is directly linked to unregistered cell phone users? The way African countries are jumping so quick to enforce this crap to even asking opinions from voters is because it comes from America, New World Order indeed has arrived.
