Saturday LXXX: 31 July 2010

Yesterday, I came up with an idea.  An idea that I’ll probably never finish, and even regardless of whatever finished state it may achieve, will take years of effort. But first, some exposition.  I’ve been working on my project of listening to all of the songs on my Zune programme for my New Year’s Resolution.  Naturally, I saved the best for last – the Zombies.  This intersects with one of my summer projects, which is to write out the lyrics to all of the Zombies’ songs.  While doing this, I got my crazy idea. I’m going to attempt to tab every single Zombies’ song.  Not only the guitar (though I will start with that because it’s the only instrument I’m proficient at), but also the piano and bass and whatever other instruments are in the songs.  I guess I’ll need to learn how to read piano music…  Great.

Yi Zip Earphones

The YI earphones concept will take care of a lot of wire-tangle-hassles in the future when they go into production. Simple thought process and application… If pants can have a zipper to hold in the essentials then why the idea can’t be used on earphones to manage them when not in use. Zip then open when you want to use them; zip them shut when you want to store them.  They come with volume control button and all

Why be reluctant to retire?

How retirement snuck up on me I had been on a new job for less than three months in 2008, when the Fortune 50 company that I worked for offered a separation incentive for managers that had been with the company for 20 years or more.  I had worked there for 34 years.  I had also been promoted from a job as a skilled trades welder and fabricator after applying and being rejected for over 40 other positions.  I liked my welding position where I had become the expert on drawing and operating a CNC cutting machine, as well as bending and welding fabrications.  It was a good job!  I was at the  top of the scale for union employees and had recently worked a lot of overtime. But, the new job had its advantages, too (a pay raise, matching 401k, incentive pay, advancement possibilities), not to mention that I was getting older and looking for a less physically demanding job that I could do more easily as I aged.  The new job was being an IT Analyst, specifically, working on a Voice team that supported a new voice over ip (VOIP) system of telephones for employees, suppliers, contractors, call centers all around the world.   I worked in a building with other employees that set up WANs, LANs, and firewalls, but ours was the only section that dealt directly with the end users (EU), the actual phone users.  Specifically, I did name changes, set up new phones and “soft” phones (phones that work from your computer  screen), voicemail, and billing.  I was level 1.5, which meant that I did not have to physically go any  of the phones that I was working on.  I could change settings on a phone in another hemisphere or reset a server from my cubicle.  Perhaps, I could have shaved the walls of my cubicle for more space as a promotion reward. Another advantage was that I could work at home when I sick or the weather was bad.  I had VPN software on my laptop, would plug in my skype phone, and it was the same as sitting at my desk at the office, sans all the meetings.  I was on my way to my own 4 hour workweek ( http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/ ).

Technology and the joys that it brings?

So while waiting in line at the Sydney Apple Store to get my brand new iPhone 4 on contract I was thinking about how much this kind of technology has helped us communicate and enabled our relationship to be able to function. To be honest I kinda doubt that our relationship would be as strong as it currently is without technology (ignoring the fact that we met online, which was a very necessary step in our relationship). I mean, honestly, it’s hard enough as it is to have to rely on phone calls as our main form of communication (courtesy of Skype), so how on earth were people before us able to maintain relationships over long distances

A Librarian, Documentary Filmmakers & iPhones

Summary:  A librarian decides that iPhone users can jailbreak their phones.  The Librarian of Congress exercise his rulemaking authority and determined classes of works that are exempt from DMCA prohibitions of circumventing security technologies on digital media.  The basic principle is that access constraints should not preclude what would otherwise be fair use such as commentary, education or criticism.  In addition to setting free the smartphones, the rules also extend a class to documentary filmmakers (and others, though those “others” are not discussed here). By coincidence, a 5 th Circuit ruling was issued at about the same time (July 26, 2010) confirming many of the principles inherent in the rulemaking by the Librarian of Congress.  See MGE UPS Systems Inc v. Power Protc Svc LLC, et al.
